Cycling Mid Wales

Welcome to our 3rd blog post... Well, as its now Spring we thought we'd blog about cycling and what mid Wales has to offer you.  It is widely known that cycling is one of the best ways for people to achieve good health and fitness and is a very popular form of tourist attraction. People who cycle regularly live longer than those who do not and lead healthier lives, so its no wonder that cycling holidays are so popular.

Some market research sourced from Mintel states

"Despite being a niche market, demand for cycling holidays is set to reach new heights. Although 16% of adults (8 million) have already been on some kind of cycling holiday, as many as 12% have not been on one, but would like to do so in the future. This suggests that (6 million) Brits are on track to become first time cycling holidaymakers."
"Although fly and flop still dominates the mass market, many well-travelled and well-off consumers are growing bored with sun worship and are seeking more active experiences," comments Richard Cope.

"The growth of independent travel is creating a new breed of holidaymaker, who is resourceful, adventurous and hungry for a taste of authenticity away from the crowds. Cycling is a great way to explore the hidden secrets of a region, enjoy intimate contact with local culture and an opportunity for travellers to feel good about benefiting local economies," he adds."source: Mintel (http://bit.ly/HIXeIE)

If you are thinking about having a cycling holiday then include mid Wales in your plans because we have some of the most beautiful, scenic, and quality number of cycling routes in Wales.

The county of Powys is located in the central and east of Wales and is the largest county, therefore we have a number of diverse and challenging cycling routes. The county is very mountainous making it a great place for hiking and mountain biking. Powys boasts the highest waterfall in the UK, Pistyll Rhaeadr, also four cave systems can be found within the area and six castles. For a sample of some of the fantastically stunning cycling routes this area of Wales has to offer then start with Guilsfield to Bala circle via Llanfyllin and Llangynog, Lake Vyrnwy to Bala Lake Loop, Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve Llanwddyn, Lake Vyrnwy to Llangadfan and Bwlch Y Groes, Llanfyllin to Hirnant and Vyrnwy Loop, Machynlleth Loop via Llanwrin Heol Pen'rallt, Newtown to Cefn Coch and Carno Loop.

You will find these routes are a mixture of relaxing and not to challenging to those that are not for the faint hearted. If you want to know more and what we can do for you as accommodation providers to make your stay in mid Wales as easy and relaxing as possible then please contact us.

We can offer you quality accommodation, advice on where to cycle, what routes to take and provide safe and secure storage for your bikes and to top it all off, we are located in a remote location, out in the lovely countryside surrounded by quiet country lanes that are perfect for a leisurely cycle. If you wish to stay here for a full week or as a stop on a route through Wales please don't hesitate to ask.

So if your planning a cycling holiday please don't discount Mid Wales as we are Britain's hidden little secret when it comes to quality cycling. Walking mid Wales

Well, here it is, our first proper blog post. This is all new to us here at Brynglas holiday cottages so you'll have to bear with us over the next few months. Firstly we would like to say a Happy New Year to all, and hope that 2012 brings you much happiness and opportunity. Must say however, the weather here in Mid Wales, particularly Powys is giving us a right battering. You might say not the best time to be outside but you would be wrong.

If you like walking there are lots of walking websites out there to promote particular areas in the UK such as Cumbria, Scotland, Yorkshire etc. but Mid Wales is very often missed. So I thought I would take this opportunity to tell the world about what amazing walks and routes we have, particularly as Mid Wales is proud to have Powis Castle near Welshpool voted the best walk in the UK by the National Trust. Being only a 20 minute drive from Brynglas Farm I must say it comes to no surprise that Powis Castle have won this award, it truly is a fantastic walk. For more information, please visit and check out the story on Wales Online.

Wales is now in New York Times' top 40 places to go in 2012 specifically for its hiking and walking routes which says a lot about the quality of our walks.  http://nyti.ms/wBpDEa
So what else do we have in Mid Wales to encourage the active walker? Well, there are many routes for you to try out such as the fantastic Ann Griffiths walk which is a seven mile Walk winding  down the Vyrnwy valley from Pont Llogel to Pontrobert.

For a truly fantastic walk why not combine this walk with the Glyndŵr’s Way which runs alongside the Ann Griffiths Walk, check out this map  of the walks provided by Powys Tourism. These walks take you next to rivers, over hills with fantastic views and past interesting sites to see. Glyndŵr’s Way begins in Knighton, on the border with England, where it connects with the Offa`s Dyke Path. It goes through small market towns in Mid Wales and tiny villages, going through Wales to Machynlleth and back across Powys to Welshpool.

We've only mentioned 2-3 major walks here but there are many more such as Ffynnon Y Clawdd Llesg up the road in Meifod, Gregynon near Llanfair Caereinion, Kerry Ridgeway, Severn Way and many more. I would write in more detail about all these walking routes but that would take me a very long time as there is so much to talk about so instead i'm going to direct you to a fantastic BBC website which has these routes in more detail http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid/sites/walks/

With these walks only a stone throw away from us, when your planning your next walking holiday and need somewhere to stay, then we are perfectly located central in Powys with easy access and information on all these routes to make your stay a very active or relaxing as you like.

Feel free to comment on this blog and share with us your walking experiences in Mid Wales and of any routes that are worth a mention.

Also check out Powys Ramblers for news and information regarding our lovely local walks http://powysramblers.org.uk/
